A thrifty mum has given a old dining table an incredibly stylish make over using her handy DIY skills and four Kmart ottomans. 

In a post to a popular Facebook group, Tara Hosking from Macedon in Victoria said she saw a similar table she wanted with a $5,000 price tag so decided to make her own instead using the tools she already had in her home. 

‘I only have basic tools so it shows beautiful things can be made with just the basics and a little vision and determination,’ she said.

Tara said when she saw Kmart’s ribbed storage ottomans she knew she could use them as legs so started scouring the internet to find a table in the shape and size she wanted. 

After finding an old dining table on Facebook marketplace for $40 she got to work by removing the legs and extending the top with a piece of hard wood and some metal braces.

For the herringbone-style top, Tara drew out a pattern, cut up plywood project sheets from Bunnings into pieces and stuck the pieces to the table with liquid nails and a nail gun.  

To give rim of the table a smooth rounded finish, she cut off the excess using a jigsaw, sanded the edges and glued on some oak moulding coverstrap from Bunnings which she wet to bend into shape.

Tara then lightly sanded the entire top and coated it with a layer of liming white stain and clear varnish. 

She bought four of Kmart’s $19 ribbed storage ottomans for the legs and gave them a lick of white paint.

Finally, she screwed the ottomans together to create to two legs, covered the join with some thin aluminium flat bar that she had painted gold and glued them to the tabletop. 

The handy mum shared her work in a post to a popular Facebook group which racked up thousands of likes and hundreds of impressed comments.
