Zampa out to extend hot run against Kohli

Outwitting the world’s best batsman twice in a week has boosted Adam Zampa’s confidence but the legspinner knows it will take something special to continue his run against Virat Kohli.

Zampa is the only bowler to dismiss Kohli on Australia’s current tour of India, having trapped him lbw in the ODI series opener while spearheading the fightback that gave the tourists brief hope of defending 7-236.

The tweaker also removed Kohli in the first Twenty20, while he was the pick of Australia’s bowlers in the high-scoring second T20.

“It’s good for the confidence. It’s exciting to get a player like that out,” Zampa said, having also been the only bowler to dismiss Kohli in the T20 series the sides played in November.

“He’s obviously a pretty big wicket for us. He’s one guy we probably always spend a little bit of extra time talking about in team meetings.

“He probably won’t want to get out to me again …

I don’t know if he’s going to do a bit more thinking about it.

“I’m going to have to bowl even better this game.”

Zampa was out of favour with national selectors a year ago but is now on track to be Australia’s frontline spinner at his first World Cup.

The 26-year-old isn’t looking that far ahead, instead relishing a chance to test himself against India’s star-studded top order while adjusting to foreign conditions with the help of Australia’s spin consultant Sridharan Sriram.

“In Australia I tend to bowl a little bit more topspinners and wrong’uns whereas here I’m probably a bit more out the front, a bit of side spin,” Zampa said.

“Sliders with a little bit of legspin; I’m finding in the nets it worked.

“Kohli was the one that went straight on.

“It might change with conditions … if we get on a bouncy wicket I’ll have to adapt to that as well. I’m just trying to learn on the road.”

The five-match ODI series, which India lead 1-0, continues at 7pm AEDT on Tuesday in Call Girls Nagpur.
